Position Statement - FHS Education for Nurses

The CAPWHN Board of Directors has issued a position statement supporting the importance of Fetal Health Surveillance initial education and refresher courses for nurses responsible for the application, interpretation, and response to intermittent auscultation and electronic fetal monitoring during pregnancy and labour. We encourage nurses and their employers to support a process to foster learning opportunities in an interdisciplinary environment.

Diaper Needs Awareness Week

Thank you to all who joined us for CAPWHN's 2nd National Diaper Drive for Diaper Needs Awareness Week held in the fall. Thanks to efforts of CAPWHN members and their colleagues thousands of diapers were donated to food and diaper banks across the country. We all enjoyed the pictures, sent by the various groups, at the annual conference. Please start planning now for the fall 2019 diaper drive so we can see your group’s efforts at supporting families in need.

CAPWHN Position Statement

CAPWHN has been profiled recently in an article published by the Huffington Post and a number of Postmedia newspapers across the country. Congratulations to the Advocacy and Health Policy Committee, whose efforts on an exceptional position statement, have increased CAPWHN's profile nationally.

On June 21, 2017, National Aboriginal Day, CAPWHN released the CAPWHN Position Statement on Cultural Safety/Humility. The position statement was authored by three members of the Advocacy and Health Policy Committee (AHPC): Lucy Barney, Sarah Reaburn, and Leah Thorp, and was created in collaboration with the Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association (CINA). The document was reviewed by the full AHPC as well as CAPWHN’s Board of Directors. Comments and suggestions were incorporated into the document and the final position statement was approved by the Board of Directors on June 14, 2017.

The AHPC identified a gap, and thanks to their hard work, today CAPWHN will become the first Canadian non-Indigenous nursing specialty association to adopt a position statement in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, focused on cultural safety and humility while caring for Indigenous people. The position statement will be released and discussed this morning in Ottawa, in conjunction with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) Indigenous Women’s Health Committee meeting.

The CAPWHN Board of Directors thanks the AHPC for their exceptional efforts and for creating a powerful position statement that will help our members provide culturally safe health care to our Indigenous community.
